How to Take Care of My Veneers?

Porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or even longer; composite veneers around 5 to 7 years. Day-to-day care is straightforward and follows the same principles as caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss daily, and attend your regular 6-monthly check-ups and cleans. Avoid biting into very hard foods – ice, hard lollies, crusty bread – with the veneered teeth.

If you grind or clench your teeth at night, this is worth discussing with your dentist before getting veneers. Grinding places significant force on the veneer surface over time and can shorten the lifespan of both porcelain and composite veneers considerably. A custom nightguard is a straightforward protective measure that your dentist can provide.

FAQ – Veneers Docklands

I work full-time in the city - how many appointments will I need if I want to do veneers?

Composite veneers require just one appointment. Porcelain veneers require two, typically one to two weeks apart. The first is for tooth preparation and impressions; the second is for fitting once the veneers are back from the laboratory. Both visits are standard appointment length. Our Docklands clinic is open 7 days, which gives some flexibility if weekday appointments are difficult to schedule.

Is the enamel removal permanent?

Yes, for porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed from the front surface of the tooth during preparation to create space for the veneer and ensure a natural appearance and fit. This process is generally irreversible – once enamel is removed, the tooth will usually require ongoing restoration with a veneer or crown in the future. It is important to make this decision with full understanding of that long-term commitment.

Will my health fund cover the cost?

Dental veneers are classified as cosmetic treatment by health funds and are generally not covered. MC Dental Docklands holds preferred provider status with Medibank, CBHS, HCF, NIB, and Smile for eligible general dental services, but this does not typically extend to cosmetic procedures. We recommend checking with your fund directly to understand what, if anything, may be claimable.

How long does veneer treatment take?

The overall timeframe depends on the material you choose and your specific needs.

Composite veneers are crafted directly on your teeth by the dentist, meaning you can walk out with a brand-new smile in just one single appointment.

Porcelain veneers require a bit more time because they are custom-made in a specialised dental laboratory. This process usually involves two to three visits spaced over a couple of weeks to allow for precise design, tooth preparation, and final bonding.

We always provide a clear, personalised timeline during your initial consultation so you can plan around your busy routine.
