Here’s why your child’s first teeth are so important
It’s a common misconception that baby teeth aren’t important because they eventually fall out. But this couldn’t be further from the truth! Your child’s primary teeth play an important role in their overall health and development.
Baby teeth help children chew food properly, speak clearly, and smile with confidence. They also act as placeholders for adult teeth, guiding them into their correct positions. If a baby tooth is lost too early due to decay or trauma, neighbouring teeth can shift into the gap. This has the potential to lead to crowding or alignment issues later on.
Healthy baby teeth also set the stage for healthy adult teeth. Tooth decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection, and even affect the development of the permanent teeth underneath. Early dental problems can also impact a child’s eating habits, sleep, and concentration.
That’s why regular dental check-ups from an early age are essential. At MC Dental, our caring dentists make visits fun and positive for little ones, while helping parents protect those precious first teeth. If something unexpected does happen, such as a knocked out tooth, our dentists can provide advice on follow-up care.
Remember, looking after baby teeth sets the foundation for a healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.
What to do if your child does knock out a baby tooth
If your child knocks out a baby tooth, stay calm and reassure them. It can be a scary moment! Unlike adult teeth, baby teeth are not usually reinserted. Gently rinse your child’s mouth with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If bleeding, use clean gauze and apply light pressure. It’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible to check for any damage and ensure the adult tooth underneath hasn’t been affected. At MC Dental, we’re here to help with gentle, same-day care when dental accidents happen.
