Caring for your toothbrush

Often people don’t replace their toothbrush frequently enough, or else they store their toothbrush incorrectly. This can lead to an unhealthy toothbrush –Which is bad news for the toothbrush user!

  • Firstly, let’s get the low-down on when to bin an old toothbrush and adorn your bathroom with a shiny brand new one.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or whenever it starts showing signs of wear, such as frayed bristles. Damaged bristles are less effective at removing food and plaque.
  • Secondly, even healthy mouths can harbour nasty bits of food, which is why toothbrushes need a really good rinse with clean water after use to remove debris.
  • Storage is also an important factor in maintaining toothbrush hygiene. Storing a toothbrush in a closed container or drawer is a no-no as the lack of airflow encourages bacteria to grow. Ideally a toothbrush should be stored in an upright holder where it can dry out.
  • And lastly, lending a toothbrush is definitely not the same as letting somebody borrow your t-shirt. Limit the potential spread of harmful bacteria by not sharing your toothbrush.
