Check Up and Clean

ROUTINE CARE FOR PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY

Dental check-up & clean

Regular dental checkup and teeth cleaning are vital for the overall health of your mouth. During a dental check-up, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jaw, look for early signs of tooth decay and gum disease or any other abnormalities, and formulate a preventative plan. Your dentist will also clean your teeth, removing plaque and tartar buildup. You should book a regular dental check-up and clean every 6-12 months.

What is included in a dental check-up appointment?

Here’s what to expect at your dental check-up appointment:

Teeth Cleaning

Deep dental cleaning is a delicate process where your dentist professionally removes plaque and tartar build-up and superficial cleaning from your teeth. This is called a scale and clean. Although regular flossing and brushing help, it doesn’t entirely remove plaque and tartar as a deep dental cleaning can. You can book online and visit us 7 days a week for dentist teeth cleaning near you – we have 4 locations in Melbourne.

Dental Examination

A dentist will examine your teeth, gums and bones during your dental examination to look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, bone damage and oral disease. An integral part of the examination is a swift oral cancer screening where the dentist checks the soft tissues of the mouth for any abnormal signs. It is a pain-free examination, and they’ll make notes on any teeth that need work or monitoring to prevent future damage and check the growth and development of your teeth. This comprehensive assessment ensures the best care for your overall oral health.

Preventative dentistry

Dental X-ray (optional)

A full mouth X-ray (OPG) can assist with identifying developmental or alignment issues. An X-ray will check between your teeth and under any existing restorations. Dental X-rays are very safe to have as they only use a very low level of radiation.

Dental Fluoride Treatment

Your dentist may recommend professional dental fluoride treatment following your dental cleaning. A dental fluoride treatment strengthens the enamel on your teeth and can help to prevent decay. This teeth cleaning treatment is painless and applied directly to your teeth.

Do I need a Dental X-ray?

Whether or not you need a dental x-ray depends on several factors: your dental history, oral health status, and your symptoms. Dentists often recommend x-rays as part of routine examinations to detect any underlying dental issues, such as cavities, impacted teeth, bone loss, or infections. X-rays are also needed before certain dental procedures, such as dental implants, orthodontic treatment, extraction, or root canal therapy.

How often should I go for a dental check-up?

Regular dental check-ups are crucial for maintaining optimal oral health. It is generally recommended to visit your dentist every 6 months. These check-ups play a vital role in the early detection of abnormalities, preventing tooth decay, addressing gum disease, and picking up on signs of disease in the jaws, bones and soft tissues, which can help prevent the need for more extensive treatments.

However, it’s important to note that the frequency of dental check-ups may vary depending on individual needs. For individuals with more complex dental needs or a higher risk of oral health issues, dentists may recommend more frequent visits, such as every 3 months. On the other hand, those with good oral health may only need to attend a check-up once every 12 months. By consulting with your dentist, you can determine the appropriate frequency of dental check-ups based on your specific oral health requirements.

Why are check-ups so important for oral health?

Regular dental check-ups are essential for maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental problems. Dentists can detect early signs of various problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, bone damage, and even oral cancers. By identifying these issues at an early stage, dentists can develop a customized dental plan to address and prevent further complications.

In addition to early detection, dental check-ups allow dentists to assess the growth and development of your teeth. This information is crucial for formulating an effective dental plan that meets your specific needs. Dentists may recommend preventative measures, such as fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and dietary advice, to help protect your teeth and maintain their health.

And they can be a cost-effective choice as well. In many cases, these routine procedures may be covered by insurance, depending on your health fund provider. Compared to the expenses associated with extensive dental procedures, restorative services, or fillings, the cost of regular cleanings and exams is significantly more affordable.

What is deep teeth cleaning?

Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a highly recommended dental procedure for individuals facing advanced gum disease or periodontal issues. Throughout this process, specialized tools are used to effectively eliminate plaque, tartar, and bacteria located below the gum line. To ensure your utmost comfort, our experienced dentists may administer local anesthesia to numb the gums during the deep cleaning procedure. This helps alleviate any potential discomfort, allowing you to undergo the treatment with ease.

If you’re facing advanced gum disease or are concerned about periodontal issues, don’t hesitate to schedule a deep cleaning appointment at MC Dental. Our friendly and professional team is committed to restoring your oral health and helping you achieve a confident smile.

What is the different between regular teeth cleaning and teeth deep cleaning?

Regular teeth cleaning prevents common dental problems, while teeth deep cleaning addresses gum disease and its early stages. Deep cleaning restores gum health, prevents further damage, and complements regular cleaning for a comprehensive oral care routine.

Regular Teeth Cleaning: Regular teeth cleaning, or prophylaxis, is a standard procedure for maintaining oral health. It focuses on removing plaque and tartar from visible tooth surfaces, along the gum line, and between teeth. It helps prevent issues like decay, gum inflammation, and bad breath.

Teeth Deep Cleaning: Teeth deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is a specialized procedure for individuals with gum disease. It involves removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gum line. Scaling eliminates deposits, while root planing smoothens tooth roots, aiding in gum healing and preventing future bacterial growth.
