2020 New Year's Dental Resolutions

According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA) Australian’s are likely to have a lax attitude toward dental health care during the summer break. Therefore, we have summarised ADA’s sound advice for anyone who believes in New Year’s resolutions.

2020 New Year’s Dental Resolutions 

  1. Reduce sugar consumption; summer is a popular season for sugar consumption. Children and adults consume a lot of sugar including; juice, soft drinks, sugar canes, gingerbread cookies, mince pies, and more! Eat these foods and drink these beverages in moderation. 
  2. Reduce alcohol consumption; a lot of alcoholic drinks are acidic and contain sugar which contributes to tooth decay. The best alternative is to drink water and stay hydrated. Also, low or no calorie drinks are better for your teeth and waistline.  
  3. Get kids mouth-guards fitted before school starts; summer holidays is a popular time for kids to play outdoor sports and often children forget to wear their mouth-guards during playtime. Dental emergencies are frequent and to avoid a chipped tooth we recommend that you get your mouth-guards checked at your next dental appointment. If your child needs a mouth-guard then it would be best to see your dentist during the summer holidays for a custom fit mouth-guard. The custom fit mouth-guard will better protect the child from injury throughout the whole year.  

Finally, we strongly recommend that you take advantage of your health fund benefits in 2020. If you have private health insurance then you may be entitled to two general dental check-ups and cleans every calendar year (January to December) at no extra cost. At MC Dental we recommend a visit every 6 months. It would be best to contact your Private Health Fund for more information.
